2019: a year of new adventures
I’ve made a leap by going out on my own and starting my own business, Elida Creative. I’ll be using the creative, organizational, and communication skills honed over the past 32 years in the design/marketing field. I’ve learned from the best in the business and look forward to collaborations with these amazing creatives to continue, just in a different way.
In creating my own identity, the first challenge was a name.
Wanting to choose something that could be personal and somewhat descriptive without being too bland or generic, took some time and exploration. I love the process though. I found that inspirations would come at odd times, often while walking the dog or spending time with my horse. Embracing this process and writing everything down, exploring all the options and then honing the list seemed the best way for me.
In the end, inspiration came from my grandmother.
My grandmother Elida Frost Bascom, was indeed an inspirational woman. Elida (pronounced eee-lai-dah), was the first female minister ordained in NH. Somehow she managed to minister to others, while raising 5 children, and running a farm with my grandfather (also a minister). She was creative, resourceful, curious and most of all resilient, all trates I strive for in life and in business.
Once I found that “right” name, I just had a feeling in my gut that it was the one for me. It felt like a warm sweater in winter, or sunshine on my face.. It just fit. The next challenge was how to incorporate some word or combination of words that would let people know what I actually do.
I didn’t want to be too specific and limit myself. I chose the word “creative” because it is pretty open ended. This allows me to start with what I know, graphic design, branding, identity design, print and digital creative visuals; but I can expand my horizons by exploring the artistic leanings that got me into this field in the first place.
When you get it right, the image, the name, the message — it speaks to your heart. So this one’s for you Gram! You are my inspiration for this next chapter in my professional life as a designer. I am very much looking forward to meeting new people and telling their stories. Because in the end, that’s what it’s all about.
